"Women Who Folking Rock returns to its new home at Michaels on Main for an evening of original music with original women. Each performer brings an authentic style to her handcrafted songs that promises to regale the senses and expand the mind.
Aliza Hava: Aliza Hava is an award-winning singer/songwriter whose breathtaking voice and driving rhythms create a sound that is at once both rootsy and ethereal. Influenced by the blues, classic rock, alt. rock, R&B and folk, she creates a soulful fusion of thoughtful lyrics combined with an inspirational and emotional appeal. Currently based in Santa Cruz, CA, Aliza previously performed under the artist/band name Eve of Eden. She has lived and toured internationally, working with various groups promoting peace through music. Her performances have taken her from the Middle East to India, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and more.
Song Nelson: Song Nelson is a multifaceted singer-songwriter. She came to the stage dancing, but songwriting has always crept into her rich, multimedia, dance-theater productions. Her songs are born of the natural world and smack of human vulnerability and the heartaches of our time. She delights in mystery, metaphor and thick vocal harmony and playfully dips into any genre; folksy dirges, bawdy blues, girl power murder ballads, blasphemous acapella hymns and the like.
Janet Croteau: Janet Croteau is a Santa Cruz, CA based songwriter, comedian, and spoken word artist. Her music is infused with her quirky and effervescent spirit. She believes that if you stop being who you are that the real people will never find you. Janet finds inspiration for her folk / Americana style songwriting from the beauty and madness of the world. She brings an authentic and humorous presence to the stage. She recently released her first album, Wild Heart.
Gina Rene: Born into a multi-ethnic family, Gina Rene grew up in Santa Cruz. She was raised in the early Hip-hop era of the 80's when it was about raw creativity and truth. Combining these influences with her own melodies, flowing over beats with her own rhymes became second nature to Gina. Music runs in her family. Her Grandpa, Leon Rene, wrote the hit song Rockin Robin, as well as Sleepy time Down South which became Louis Armstrong's theme song. He also owned the first black independent record label on the West Coast, Exclusive Records. Gina will sooth you with her sweet melodic tones before waking you up with the truth in her words. She writes and sings her own songs, blending R&B and Pop melodies with the wit and lyricism
