PG&E has decided to shut down the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in 2025. At that point, PG&E will be required to decommission the facility. The decommissioning will be a complex and expensive process, costing billions of dollars and taking many decades.
In this workshop, Alex Karlin, a former Administrative Judge at the NRC, will describe the cleanup process for Diablo Canyon. This will cover the management and disposal Diablos radioactive waste and how the land will be cleaned up. He will also address some of the economic impacts of the closure of SLO Countys largest employer.
Alex Karlin is a retired US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Administrative Law Judge. He presided over the adjudication of PG&Es application to renew the Diablo Canyon NRC license and on the Yucca Mountain licensing case. Prior to that, he was an environmental attorney, both at USEPA and in private practice. Judge Karlin is an SLO resident and currently serves on the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel.
