Memoir: Situation, Story, and the Person You Used to Be
Memoir: Like a river, experience shapes the landscape of our lives in profound ways. Whether ordinary or extraordinary, the things that happen to us make us who we are and connect us to our common humanity. Essayist and author Anne Visser Ney will take you on a guided tour of the popular genre. Well explore the difference between anecdote and memoir, and between memoir and fiction. Class includes guided exercises to hone your craft craft whether you are new to the genre or have a memoir-in-progress.
About the Instructor: Anne Ney is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and writer whose work has recently appeared or is forthcoming in Ruminate, The Fourth River; Brain, Child, and The Crab Orchard Review. Her work has received Pushcart (fiction) and Whiting Award (nonfiction) nominations; and the 2018 Regional Veterans Administration Creative Writing Arts First Place Award. Her essays are anthologized in Its My Country, Too and "Red, White, and True" (U. Nebraska/ Potomac Press). She has taught high school and college science in Georgia and Florida, and teaches creative writing to women veterans through Wounded Warrior Project/ Milspeak Foundation. She holds an MS in Biology from Georgia Southern University and an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
