The Texas Chili Queens by Kathleen Fletcher
This is a highly staged studio production of a new play focusing on a largely forgotten story in Texas history. Texas history is rich and flavorful, just like the chili made popular by a collection of entrepreneurial women in San Antonio in the 19th century. Set in a modern-day elementary school, a 4th grade descendant of an original Chili Queen needs to prepare for a class project about family history. But the problem is that her family has always been "ordinary", so no one thought to save their stories. But that doesn't stop our young protagonist who joins her grandmother on a journey to rediscover their family's heritage. What they find is the story of a group of women we seldom hear about today but who made business and culinary history. Jumping between the past and present, this multi-generational historical story celebrates what everybody can bring to the table.
