UMI is an intoxicating exploration of butoh dance, music, and taiko drumming.  Performed by OnenessButoh and Rain Ensemble, UMI consists of two programs:

1) World Premiere of Ode to Minamata (2019)

Ode to Minamata is a butoh performance choreographed by Judith Kajiwara and performed by OnenessButoh.  It is a tribute to the Spirit of the Japanese residents of a small seaside fishing village in Minamata, Japan.  Since 1907, Chisso Corporation--a manufacturer of plasticshad a strong presence in  Minamata.  Over the years, it employed 60% of the Minamata residents, bringing prosperity and a higher standard of living to the village.  Chisso also carelessly dumped an estimated 27 tons of methylmercury into Minamata Bay, which contaminated the fish--the residents' main source of protein.  This lasted for 37 years.  In the early 1950s, residents began exhibiting strange, uncontrollable neurological symptoms.  An estimated 2 million people suffered debilitating health problems leading to permanent disability, and eventually a slow and painful death.  Sadly, Chisso denied responsibility for the contamination until 1970, when it was officially identified as the source.

Ode to Minamata is a remembrance of this forgotten incident along with many other forms of global environmental annihilation that continue to this day.

2)  Confluence  Rain Ensemble  Taiko (Japanese drums), winds, gongs and bells.
