Live at Studio5: LAPIS TRIO
Casey Nielsen, nylon string guitar Dan Thatcher, bass Bob Garrett, percussion
Innovative composer/guitarist Casey Nielsen successfully straddles both the classical and jazz worlds in a way that is quite rare. He is a serious player in both areas, and his compositional skills only add to his multi-faceted artistry. With his Lapis Trio he has created a new recording, "The Travelers", which, with its embrace of multiple genres and quasi-narrative structure, speaks directly to me. The resulting music is stunning. This is from Casey's liner notes to The Travelers:
"The Travelers began as a compositional device that framed this entire project. I imagined myself as a composer in a small village. What if my role in this community was that I had to perform a new piece every evening as my neighbors returned from work? I imagined what I might write in one day. Each piece would need to immediately engage the work- weary audience by being unique and entertaining. The music, like the returning community members, would also travel in some sense and then come home."
Come join us as we celebrate Casey's newest release!
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience!
Cash bar, light snacks, free parking right outside. Doors open for cocktails at 7:30.
