Alice
Lewis Carroll's classic, Alice in Wonderland, was adapted for the 100-acre "stage" a farmstead just up the road from Guilford Center Stage for the Monteverdi Players in 1978 by John Carroll, with a marvelous musical score by composer Nick Humez. Using the script and music from that production, Guilford Center Stage pays tribute to that iconic production with a chamber version, reflected in the looking glass of our intimate space.
Richard Epstein directs the cast of actors and singers, with the lovely Humez songs, Evelyn McLean, music director.
While popularly known as a story for children, Carroll's work is quite sophisticated. It defines the brief Nonsense movement in Victorian literature. The brilliant wordplay continues to delight readers and audiences. Nick Humez' score contains charming incidental pieces, clever parody songs, and enchanting melodies, skillfully capturing the Victorian ambience and complementing the narrative at every turn.
Older children may enjoy this show, and are certainly welcome.
