Circle Mirror Transformation
Circle Mirror Transformation, a comedy/drama that has been called "a love letter to the theater," is the next offering at the Oil Lamp Theater in Glenview. This production will be directed by Oil Lamp's Executive and Artistic Director, Keith Gerth and will open on July 26th. The show runs through August 25th
This heartwarming and witty play tells the story of five people in the town of Shirley, Vermont who come together to take a six-week adult acting class. During their time together, these "non actors" undertake various acting exercises and games designed to break down social barriers and build trust. Gradually, the teacher and her four students open up to one another. As their small group learns about the tools that actors need in order to observe, to listen carefully and to inhabit the lives of others, they also discover new truths about themselves.
Marty (June Miller) is the middle-aged teacher and leader of the group who shepherds her class through its various exercises of self-discovery. Her class includes James (Stephen Smith), her ex-hippy husband, who enthusiastically supports his wife but who has issues of his own. Theresa (Hallie Peterson), a self-possessed former actress from New York, is recovering from a recent breakup and quietly tending her own emotional wounds. Schultz (Bill Chamberlain) is a divorced carpenter whose good nature and passion for life mingle with a neediness that tends to well, complicate things. Lauren (Anna Schutz) is a shy but overachieving teenager who dreams of one day playing Maria in West Side Story.
Not surprisingly, emotional complications crop up in this diverse group of people who are bound together by a common passion for their art. Together, these charming individuals discover that living an artistic life requires sincerity, compassion and a genuine willingness to face the truth about oneself.
Circle Mirror Transformation won the Obie Award for Best New American Play in 2010. In that same year, it was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. The New York Times hailed this show as "an absorbing, unblinking and sharply funny play" while the San Francisco Chronicle described it as "Eloquent luminous revelatory"
This play runs approximately 2 hours with an intermission.
