Twice Told: to the Moon and Back
J. Lindsay Brown & Friends presents Twice Told: to the Moon and Back, a concert featuring new and recent choreography by J. Lindsay Brown (and, of course, her friends). Jillian Hopper, Maddy Rager & Chris Sies, Tehillah Frederick, and Tracy Pearson join Lindsay in this Chicago debut at Fasseas WhiteBox at The Drucker Center!
In "Moon Stories" J. Lindsay Brown takes viewers back to 1969, when America burned with revolution, internal strife, and the discomfort of a rapidly changing world. Amid the chaos, three men catapulted into space in an unprecedented mission to the moon, carrying the words "We came in Peace for All Mankind." This work examines the men who looked back at earth with a new understanding of humanity.
Tehillah Frederick presents "filled", a solo depicting the movement of "not-having" to "having". The trajectory of the piece illustrates feelings of loss, emptiness and being without, which transitions into a state of possession, ownership and being poured into.
(renewed) is a collaborative dance and percussion work by Maddy Rager and Chris Sies. (renewed) will explore what it means to travel and exist in different spaces through a series of investigations surrounding various interpretations of relocating oneself.
Jillian Hopper's solo focuses on rituals as preparation for spiritual engagement and internal awareness. Hopper explores how to connect with her audience on a visceral level by transporting them into the work through various her own process of embodied movement.
Tracy Pearson's new group work features local dancers from the pre-professional program at the Academy of Dance Arts in Downers Grove, IL.
The concert ends with a restaging of "Many Upon a Time", a wild romp through the world of fairytales. Through humor, partnering, spoken word, and physicality, J. Lindsay Brown deconstructs and reconsiders the plights of several fairytale princesses. Set in the round, Many Upon a Time attempts to bring realism to the fantastical, and to bring three-dimensionality to well known characters like Cinderella and Rapunzel. By comparing old and new, French and German versions of fairytales, viewers will find their own happy ending (or not).
