The Heiress
A young, shy Catherine Sloper lives with her wealthy and prominent father Dr. Austin Sloper and her aunt Lavinia Penniman in 19th century New York. Catherine's father still lives in the memory of his beloved, but deceased, wife. There is little that Catherine can do to impress her father. Catherine's world suddenly changes when she meets and plans to marry the handsome but penniless Morris Townsend. But, Dr. Sloper mistrusts Townsend's intentions believing that his real interest in Catherine is focused on her future inheritance. Determined to finally step out of her father's overbearing shadow, Catherine makes plans to marry Townsend. Ruth and Augustus Goetz's The Heiress, inspired by the 1880 Henry James novel Washington Square, shows a woman's powerful transformation as she comes to see that she is deserving of freedom.
