Rounding out the 2012-2013 season is the ever-popular and edgy Kander and Ebb musical Chicago. Set in the Prohibition-era Chicago, the story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal." The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins who was assigned to cover the 1924 trials of murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. Taking place in the roaring twenties, Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap, and the audience watches how the rest of story plays out behind bars. The Broadway production opened on June 3, 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances. The 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival on Broadway and is Broadway's fourth longest-running show having more than 5,900 performances as of April 2011. This sharp edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by renowned choreographer Bob Fosse. Chicago has been billed by the New York Times as "a pulse racing revival that flies us right into musical heaven" and the New York Post says it is "as dazzling a demonstration of the craft of musical theatre as you're ever going to see on a Broadway stage."
