ABOUT THE PERFORMERS  Feb. 5, 2019

STEVEN BOWERS -
Steven Bowers writes songs that are as hooky as they are thoughtful, with a novelists grasp of the human condition, and a melody junkies thirst for pretty sounds. Born and raised in Newfoundland and living now on Vancouver Island, Bowers has just wrapped production of his fifth full length album, Elk Island Park, produced by Jason Mingo and JUNO award-winning producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, Yukon Blonde, Black Mountain). His 2012 release, Beothuk Words, landed placements on TV shows such as CBC's Heartland, and in independent films, notably Roaming (2013 Best Feature Film Winner, Canadian Independent Film Festival). His 2008 effort Homing generated nominations for Folk Recording, Songwriter and Producer of the Year from 2008 Music Nova Scotia Awards along with a JUNO Showcase and an ECMA nomination for Folk Recording of the Year. He lives in Victoria, BC, with his wife and their daughter.

MAYA RAE - Vancouver-based, singer, musician and composer, Maya Raeis inspired by musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and The Beatles, and modern-day artists like Jamie Cullum, Megan Trainor, Ed Sheeran, and Adele. She has performed on many stages and venues including The Vancouver Jazz Festival, sharing the stage with many of Vancouvers best jazz musicians.
As a part of Mayas stories to her listeners, there has always been a priority to speak for youth and peers that have faced barriers and personal difficulties in their life. Maya says, I am trying to write songs that convey a message of self-love and female empowerment. My songs speak about my experiences throughout high school and as a teenage girl, and the various struggles that adolescents encounter in their daily lives. The main message that I want to get across
to my listeners is to promote ones authenticity and to bring hope and empowerment to those who listen.
Her new release of original songs will mark her second -  all by the age of only 16.

TOM TAYLOR - Vancouver based Tom Taylor, was first introduced to music when his grade ten English teacher Al Horne played Mr. Tamborine Man on his big twelve string acoustic guitar. From that day on, Tom was hooked on acoustic folk/roots music. Soon after came Dylan,  Neil Young, John Prine and many others who inspired Tom to pick up the acoustic guitar and begin his own songwriting journey.
It was at Hillside Secondary School that Tom also met his future band mates and forming the quartet She Stole My Beer, releasing two albums and touring for the next 20 years.
Tom solo career was launched with his first two albums of original songs -  "King of July", and Running Late - both produced by Canadian string virtuoso Steve Dawson. His third, Pull Over Here was produced by longtime friend Barney Bentall, with whom he also performs in the trio BTU along with Shari Ulrich.
As Tom continues to carry the classic tradition of the singer/songwriter, capturing the listener with his introspective and emotion filled lyrics, the heart of all Toms music are the songs that document Toms power- both as a songwriter and a musician.

SHARI ULRICH (Host / Producer)
Sharis 45-year career  from Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist  has led to 23 albums, including collaborations with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and the bluegrass band The High Bar Gang. Her work has garnered several Juno Award nominations and two awards, induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. Her passion for songwriters sharing a stage has led her to produce the Bluebird North and SongBird North series for the SAC for over 21 years, both locally and nationally. She is currently recording a new album, slated for an early spring 2019 release on Borealis Records. www.shariulrich.com
