In the tradition of Cuban troubadours new and old, TROVADORO evokes deep currents of the human heart and soul with strings, percussion and song. This group brings together Seattle's finest players of Cuban Son music to perform original compositions in traditional styles.
TROVADORO is guided by Santiago de Cuba's Kiki Valera (Cuatro & Vocals) and his lifetime of extensive performance, international touring, arranging, recording, and mastery of the Cuban Cuatro. Kiki is the eldest son and director of La Familia Valera Miranda - one of Cuba's most revered families of Son musicians. Pedrito Vargas (Bongó & Vocals) first came to Seattle touring with Barbarito Torres from Buena Vista Social Club fame and has since anchored Cambalache and many local Son & Salsa groups. Justin Maggart (Lead Vocals & Hand Percussion) is a founder and core member of SuperSones - a traditional Cuban septet that has performed Cuban Son in Seattle and throughout the Pacific Northwest for the last 17 years. Javier Marú (Guitar & Vocals) brings years of experience playing Trova and Son in Havana, Switzerland and now in Seattle with Kiki Valera & Cubaché and others. Local favorite Lalo Bello (Congas & Vocals) also performs with Trío Cubay, The Pazific and West Seattle Soul.
TROVADORO began as a collaboration between Justin Maggart and Kiki Valera to compose, arrange and record an album of original songs in traditional Cuban styles and perform them for a variety of audiences in Spring 2017. In June 2015, this project was funded, in part, by a grant from King County 4Culture. In June 2017, the group independently released their first album Lengua, Alambre y Cuero (Tongues, Strings and Skins) which is widely available for sale on all on-line music platforms. TROVADORO also educates diverse communities about Cuban music by leading interactive multi-media concert-workshops for audiences of all-ages.
