BP Portrait Award
About the day:
The BP Portrait Award offers a great opportunity to reflect on what makes a good art work or portrait. The session would be split into 2 parts, firstly looking at how to analyse the paintings and secondly thinking about developing characters and stories that are inspired by the artwork on show. Part one What is a portrait? What makes a good portrait? How do we work out the criteria for a strong portrait? Should art be judged? We will try out different ways of judging.
Part two The BP portrait exhibition is also a great opportunity to personalise learning by letting pupils develop their own characters/ stories using the work as inspiration, particularly as many of the portraits are of unknown people.
We will look at different techniques and ways to engage students with the artwork. Helping them to personally relate to the work, with an emphasis on pupil led activities that have the opportunity to be developed in ways that appeal to teenagers. Developing a character - choosing an image in the gallery that appeals to you we will discuss that persons mood, character and attributes. What would they say to us? Double exposures - developing a character portrait, thinking about layers of meaning & symbols. We will explore ways of layering meaning, including photographic double exposures. Film Trailer storyboarding ideas involving your characters
