LARRY & HIS FLASK www.larryandhisflask.com
ABOUT Larry And His Flask is more than the sum of its parts. Jamin Marshall, Ian Cook, Andrew Carew, Jesse Marshall and Kirk Skatvold have formed something fresh and unique; cherry picking some of the best sounds of many genres to create a high energy punch in the gut that is also somehow sweet and harmonious.
Hailing from Bend, Oregon in the eastern shadow of the Cascade mountain range; the landscape seems to flow into their music like the many rivers that crisscross their native territory.
Getting their start in 2003 as a blood, sweat and beers punk ensemble, they cut their teeth all across the U.S. and Canada and along the way eventually arriving at their current amalgam; a folk/rock, bluegrass, gypsy jazz/swing monster. They have crafted their own genre name to properly describe their sound: Post-Americana.
2010 saw the start of a string of solid releases; beginning with a self titled EP, 2011s All That We Know, 2012s Hobos Lament and 2013s By The Lamplight. Theyve since taken them on tour all around the globe, shattering audiences from Honolulu to Holland and everywhere in between.
A notoriously raucous live band, Larry And His Flask have always seemed to deliver the best of both worlds, melodic and engaging records and a maelstrom of a live performance.
Hitting the road once again in support of the new record, Larry And His Flask can be seen all over the world picking up right where they left off without missing a single note.
BLACK SQUARE https://www.facebook.com/blacksquareband/ Black Squares sound is a blend of ska and reggae delivered with the urgency and intensity of punk rock. As reggae music was the backdrop for these Hawaii raised punk rockers, the sound of Black Square came about organically from their musical and geographical upbringing. The bands name comes from the Russian artist Kasimir Malevichs 1915 painting of a black square. The theory behind the painting was that the material matter of art was without value and the true value in a work of art was in the feeling it expressed or provokedwithout leading the viewer to a specific object based reflection. Black Square seeks to do the same with their music.
Black Square was formed as a Hardcore Punk trio in 2002. Influenced by bands like Operation Ivy, Minor Threat, Bad Brains and The Clash, Black Squares lyrical focus aimed at attempting to raise consciousness concerning political, environmental, cultural, and economic issuesmany specific to Hawaii.
Black Square released their first CD End the Cycle in the summer of 2004. End the Cycles basic punk and reggae sound is a great musical match to the lyrics and stands up to the test of time. Black Square released their second album, One Glass of Water in January of 2007. The album incorporates their full horn section and features songs covering such diverse concerns as teenage homelessness, globalization, militarization, and the Japanese internment camps during WWII. Their third cd Onward was released in June 2008 infused with the influence of traditional ska music without compromising any of their unique blend of punk-fused reggae tones. Their fourth self-titled CD was released in June of 2011. Black Square captures the uniqueness of their sound with tracks that range from punk to dub all the while sounding coherent.
Black Square tours the mainland on a consistent basis including 2011s Vans Warped Tour. Their music has been featured on FUEL TV, Billabong Surf, Heavy Water, Wahine Blue, Board Stories, and the feature films One Kine Day and Noho Hewa.
