"It is by provoking instability that we are forced to constantly reconfigure our place in the world and have a chance at transformation. Instability then becomes both a technical and poetic strategy." -Clara Trigo
INTENSIVE DESCRIPTION What happens when our senses are disoriented? How do we discover new ways of thinking about the world through movement? What ideas do we carry with us? How does collective experience offer the possibility of personal transformation? Such questions guide the pedagogy of this unique five-day workshop offered by award-winning dancer, choreographer and professor Clara Trigo from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in Brazil. Drawing influence from Somatics, Contemporary Brazilian Technique and her Master's research, Professor Trigo will guide the group through a series of improvisations, movement structures and personal investigations designed to challenge pre-conceived notions. The rigorous program will present insights into balance, proprioception, and motor coordination; culminating in an original creation performance along with works by Professor Trigo and other Los Angeles artists.
"I am especially interested in creative teaching practices that not only reproduce a tradition or method, but also support personal experience as a privileged form of building knowledge. Especially when we talk about a movement practice, it is a kind of learning that is non-transferable and irreplaceable."
BIO Clara Trigo holds a master's degree from the Dance School of the Federal University of Bahia where she now teaches "Creative Processes." She began her training in Ballet and later studied Capoeira, Contemporary, African and Flamenco dance in Seville, Spain. Since 1999 she has worked as a dancer and dance-maker performing and creating works with choreographers from the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Cape Verde and Brazil. As founder and artistic director of the dance company Sua Cia, based in Salvador, Bahia, she has presented work, taught seminars, hosted conferences throughout Brazil and Europe. Clara's work as a choreographer explores the dynamic place when the body and mind are destabilized. She has pioneered the use and creation of Pilates equipment (Flymoon Creations) designed to facilitate technical training. As a teacher Clara proposes a constant exchange between technical improvement and creative processes.
