"NAVFAC Projects Update for the Southwest Region"

Captain Mark K. Edelson, CEC, USN Commanding Officer - NAVFAC Southwest & Regional Engineer Navy Region Southwest
BIO: Captain Mark Edelson assumed command of NAVFAC Southwest in September 2017, where he leads 3,000 facilities professionals providing base planning, facilities design, construction and maintenance, acquisition, real estate and environmental services at 19 Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force installations. From August 2015 until assuming command, he was the NAVFAC Deputy Commander for Operations, responsible for the execution oversight of $15 billion per year, with additional responsibilities as the Contingency Engineering Business Line Leader and corporate Safety Officer.
He previously commanded the NAVFAC Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center, leading a workforce of 1,100 military and civilian personnel providing facilities research and development, specialized engineering, and lifecycle acquisition and management of expeditionary equipment.
He was commissioned through the ROTC program from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and a history minor. First assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FIVE during Operations Desert Shield/Storm and as the Detail Korea Officer in Charge, then reporting as Officer in Charge of Construction Battalion Unit FOUR ZERO FIVE in San Diego where he relocated the unit from NAS Miramar to NAS North Island. He next reported as the Assistant Resident Officer in Charge of Construction at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Crete, Greece before returning to California as the MCAS Camp Pendleton Public Works Officer where he supervised the $100 million BRAC enlargement of the Air Station. Captain Edelson attended graduate school in 1998, receiving a Master of Science in civil engineering (construction management) from Stanford University before reporting as the Officer in Charge of Combat Service Support Team TWO with Naval Special Warfare Group TWO in Norfolk, Virginia.
Following his tour with the SEALs, he served as the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction for Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. From February to June 2003, he was the I MEF Engineer Group Current Operations Officer during Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom. Following his return from Iraq, he joined Engineering Field Activity Chesapeake as the Integrated Product Team Leader for the Naval District Washington. He next served as the Consequence Management Branch Head at Commander, Navy Installations Command where he directed the Navy's Fire & Emergency Services and Emergency Management programs. In 2006 he became the Public Works Officer at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, directing facilities at the Navy's west coast master jet base. Reporting to NAVFAC HQ in Washington, DC in 2008, he served as the Deputy Chief Operating Officer for the Navy Expeditionary Combat Enterprise, until deploying to Afghanistan in April 2010 to direct the $6.8 billion construction program for the Afghanistan Army and Air Force. From 2011 to 2013, Captain Edelson served as the NAVFAC Southeast Operations Officer, overseeing the command's $1.8 billion facilities program through 20 field offices in the southeastern United States and the Caribbean.
Captain Edelson is a registered civil engineer in Virginia, a graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, a member of the Defense Acquisition Corps, and a member of the Society of American Military Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (seven awards), the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), and the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards); he is a Seabee Combat Warfare qualified officer.
