1/13/19 Solo Sundays - Natacha Ruck, Scott Cohen, Ady Lady, Tommi Avicolli Mecca
Beyond stand-up and storytelling, solo theater creates casts of thousands - plus special effects - all bursting from a single performer. The results are hilarious and heartbreaking, passionate and provocative, ablaze with personal visions.
NATACHA RUCK -------------------------------------- "You're good for nothing . . . I'll milk the cow myself."
Natacha stepped into her French grandmother's kitchen in the hope of a birthday present. But the gift-wrapped box on the windowsill was only the latest salvo of a multi-generational battle--and Natacha found herself on the front lines. It would take a submarine disaster, the songs of Edith Piaf, and countless pounds of chocolate to bring its last two opponents to a final detente.
SCOTT COHEN -------------------------------------- "Colorful Grandparents and Black & White Television"
What do you mean you don't remember Fatty Arbuckle? Scott's grandfather shouted, loudly enough for the entire diner to hear. Although it had been fifty years since the murder trial ended Arbuckle's movie career, seven year old Scott knew better than to make excuses. He apologized and sat silently in the booth waiting for his grandfather to regain his composure. Scott knew his grandfather's next sentence would be important and must be committed to memory.
ADY LADY -------------------------------------- "Meditations on MUNI"
Ady desperately wants to love mankind. How is she supposed to do this on Muni? Can a hymn offer salvation? And are we all really reflections of one another or was Deepak lying about that? One thing is certain: a golden shower is not a baptism.
TOMMI AVICOLLI MECCA -------------------------------------- "The Old Brown Jacket"
On that sweltering summer night in 1972, the last thing I wanted to deal with was Papa barging into my room. He had found out I appeared on TV the night before to debate an aversion therapist who was "curing" queers by zapping them with electricity. How could I explain it to him? He couldn't understand long hair or folk music, let alone the fact that I was queer and proud of it. This wasn't going to end well.
