David Lopato - piano, composer Lucas Pino - saxes, clarinet Kent McLagan - string bass New York-based composer/pianist David Lopato will perform a concert of original compositions with longtime musical colleagues Kent McLagan (string bass) and Lucas Pino (sax, clarinet).
Saturday, Jan. 12 7:30pm (doors open at 6:30)
Lopatos uncanny rapport with McLagan reflects a musical friendship that spans over 40 years, dating back to their college days at Yale. A recipient of multiple grants for both composition and performance from the N.E.A., New York Foundation for the Arts, the Beards Fund and a Fulbright Fellowship to study Javanese gamelan in Surakarta,Indonesia, Lopato is on the faculty of the Jazz and Contemporary Music department of the New School University in Manhattan, where he has taught for the last 27 years.
McLagan is not only a master bassist and composer, but also builds acoustic basses. His clientele include such luminaries of the modern jazz world as Mark Dresser, Anthony Cox and Ratzo Harris.
Reed virtuoso Lucas Pino has been a member of Lopatos ensembles for the last 5 years. One of the most sought-after sidemen in the NYC jazz community. His 9-piece group "No Net Nonet" appears monthly at NYs famous Smalls Jazz Club.
Lopato's compositions and performances display an inner logic, whether conjuring Willie "The Lion" Smith or James P. Johnson on the fascinating "The Big Bad Wolf Ain't So Bad After All," or swimming in the murky and perilous waters of artists like John Cage and Conlon Nancarrow ("Piano Roll"). ...Lopato's music exudes an inextinguishable spirit of optimism and hope All About Jazz
