Dmitri Matheny Group: What the World Needs Now
Voted NW Instrumentalist of the Year in the recent Seattle Earshot Jazz Awards, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny will celebrate Burt Bacharach's 90th Year at the Sound Room Oakland on Saturday, February 2 at 8:00 pm.
Popular music wouldn't be the same without the masterful songwriting of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Bacharach's passionate melodies and David's heartfelt lyrics delivered hit after hit, including Close to You, What the World Needs Now Alfie, and many, many more.
Renowned for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as a visionary (San Francisco Examiner) and a jazz treasure (All Music Guide). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protege of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered a loyal international following, releasing eleven critically acclaimed CDs, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny one of the jazz world's most talented horn players.
Matheny will showcase Bacharach's most beloved songs in collaboration with some of Northern California's finest jazz artists: Ken French piano, Aaron Germain bass and Leon Joyce Jr drums.
While in the Bay Area, Matheny will also present jazz improvisation workshops at WestValley College, Aragon High School and San Mateo High School.
