VOICE FROM THE VILLAGE by MELVIN ISHMAEL JOHNSON
The play traces the life of Lynn Manning from the time he was shot and blinded at age 23 to becoming a poet, playwright and actor, and touches on the founding of the "Watts Village Theater Company" with community activist Quentin Drew.
The script is held together by actual audio of Lynn's interview on "The Qumran Report" and multimedia projections upon the video wall, including scenes from Lynn performing Sgt. Waters' monologue from the play A SOLDIER'S PLAY by Charles Fuller; a monologue from his first play SHOOT; two scenes about the founding of the Watts Village Theater Company, and a scene with Maria Oshodi, the founder of EXTANT, Britains only professional performing arts company of blind and partially sighted people, while Lynn was on tour in England performing his award-winning play WEIGHTS.
