The Django Workshop: Looking at the Origins of Gypsy Jazz
Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis is a living legend who breathes new life into existing violin and fiddle styles with a high-energy blend of classical, gypsy jazz and folk music. A faculty member of the Amsterdam Conservancy, Tim is considered most accomplished among the students of Stephane Grapelli. He is widely known from his many recordings and tours with the top European gypsy guitarists, such as Fapy Lafertin, The Rosenberg Trio, Angelo Debarre, Samson Schmitt and others. This award-winning violinist also is a frequent visitor to the United States, with headline performances at all the major gypsy jazz festivals.

Tim Kliphuis is the author of the best-selling Mel Bay book Stéphane Grappelli: Gypsy Jazz Violin; and DVDs on hot jazz violin and jazz etudes. His workshops and master classes have been featured at festivals, conservatoires and summer courses in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, Japan and Europe. Tim teaches improvisation at the Amsterdam and Tilburg conservatoires, and hosts the annual sold-out Grappelli-Django Camp in Holland every August.

Mr. Kliphuis will lead an enlightening one-and-a-half hour workshop in Gainesville, Florida, on February 7th 2018 at 7:00 p.m. He will introduce you to the exciting gypsy jazz style of violinist Stéphane Grappelli and guitarist Django Reinhardt. Subjects will include jazz improvisation and stylistic tips - such as slides, blue notes, and syncopated jazz rhythms - taught in the context of learning popular and illustrative gypsy jazz standards.

Players of all string instruments are welcome! While intermediate and advanced musical skills would be most beneficial, good command of scales in the first and perhaps third position would suggest sufficient competency. No improvisation experience is necessary. By working with everyone on their individual level, Tim and his brilliant teaching are guaranteed to inspire and spirit you along the road to being a gypsy jazz player. This is an exceptional opportunity for north-Florida string musicians to explore this rich genre of string music under the guidance of one of its most acclaimed performers and dedicated teachers.
