Beaver Trilogy and Rubin & Ed: An evening with Trent Harris
The Beaver Trilogy [2000, blu-ray, 83min] Tues, 7/30: 7pm
Rubin and Ed [1992, 35mm, 82min] Tues, 7/30: 9pm
Critics have called the films of American director Trent Harris absurd, pointless, hysterical, and brilliant. The Grand Illusion Cinema celebrates the work of this cult filmmaker with rare screenings of Rubin & Ed and The Beaver Trilogy with Mr. Harris in person on Tuesday, July 30th.
Harris first gained a cult following for his surreal road trip film, Rubin and Ed, the film the Grand Illusion screened upon it's re-opening as a non-profit in 2004. Film Comment says it's "quotable, hilarious, and, yes, even moving." Screened in glorious 35mm courtesy of Sony Pictures Repertory.
Harris' magnum opus, The Beaver Trilogy, was listed by the London Guardian as one of "Fifty Lost Masterpieces" and in the "Top Ten" list of Art Forum Magazine. Nearly 20 years in the making, it documents a small town Olivia Newton-John impersonator, then spin off into two separate "dramatizations" featuring Sean Penn and Crispin Glover. The New York Times called it "a riveting, strange, multilayered inquiry into celebrity obsession and serendipity."
