Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show, now in its 11th year. Produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig and taking place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District, it showcases an eclectic, multicultural mix of intelligent comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. Geduldig created the event in 2008 order to bring back to life a comedy show that used to take place in the 1980s and 1990s at El Rio.
The Friday January 18th show features Bernadette Luckett, Joe Klocek, Chey Bell, Arjun Banerjee, and Lisa Geduldig.
Bernadette Luckett started doing stand up 20+ years ago in New York City after working as a professional model, a cookie packer, and a lab tech at a VD clinic. She worked the road for two straight years, performing at comedy clubs all over the US, from Alaska and Hawaii to Floridas cruise ships. She has appeared on stand up shows on NBC, Comedy Central, A&E, and MTV. Bernadette segued from stand up to sitcom writing and has been a writer/producer on several TV sitcoms, including Living Single; Sister, Sister; Buddies (with Dave Chappelle), The Tracy Morgan Show, and Girlfriends. She is a contributing writer to the comedic anthologies No Kidding: Women Writers on Bypassing Parenthood and SisterWriterEaters, and also co-authored the popular self-awareness book 21 Days of Enlightenments. She appeared in and co-produced the award-winning documentary Comedy Warriors: Healing Through Humor which aired on Showtime, PBS, Netflix and Hulu. Joe Klocek is a square peg in a round hole sort of guy, raised a Midwesterner, so he has manners, but living in San Francisco for 20 years. He does two things great: tells stories and talks to the crowd. He did a two-month "comic in residency" at the first comedy club in Shanghai where he recorded an album exclusively for the ex-pat community living and laughing there. He has been featured on NPR's "Snap Judgment" and on Comedy Centrals "Live at Gotham," "Last Comic Standing," and was commentator for the Emmy award-winning documentary "A Bridge so Far." Co-creator of the critically acclaimed storytelling show "Previously Secret Information," Joe has also been a runner-up in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition and the "Seattle Comedy Competition and was voted "Best Comic" in the 2011 SF Weekly Readers Poll. Joe has performed at every major comedy club in the country including Alaska.
Chey Bell is a bisexual comedian who's brutally honest and uniquely clever. Often confounded by stupidity, Chey's comedy mirrors life experiences and self-discovery, touching on everything from family, drugs, coworkers, misspelled tattoos and sexuality. Her energetic stage presence is engaging, silly, fearless and direct, just like her.
Arjun Banerjee is a young up and coming stand up comedian in the Bay Area comedy scene. His therapist has described his style as "warm, inviting yet witty." He has performed in both the Desi Comedy Fest and SF Sketchfest.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer whos the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ (which celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2017), Comedy Returns to El Rio, and the new monthly comedy show, Comedy at Ashkenaz! on the second Thursday of the month at Ashkenaz in Berkeley. Lisa moonlights as a freelance arts publicist.
