Music From Japan Festival 2019
Music From Japan is pleased to announce its Festival 2019 program. For its 44th season MFJ will present the fourth year of the Artist Residence Program which will facilitate dialogue between composers, critics and music scholars from the US and Japan. The Artist Residence Program will also include two concerts of Japanese music: one curated by musicologist Miyuki Shiraishi and one featuring the works of Yumi Saiki.
On Saturday, March 2nd, the Shiraishi-curated program will feature composers influenced by John Cage. A highlight of the program will be the world premiere of a new piece by Takahiro Kuroda, commissioned by Music From Japan. The concert will be preceded by a lecture by the curator, and followed by an open forum with a question and answer session. The Sunday concert, The Works of Yumi Saiki, will include a cross-section of the composers work over the past fifteen years. It too will be followed by an open forum with New York and Japanese composers, critics and scholars.
The festival features some of New York's top musicians, including Momenta String Quartet, Fred Sherry, Aaron Wunsch, Vicky Chow, Ned Rothenberg and Oren Fader.
