To Venezuela with Love: A Humanitarian Aid Benefit
Featuring the Djangophiles, Maria Olaya (Classical guitar), Marian Gutiérrez, and Anne Weiss (blues and folk) and friends!
Sponsored By Artichoke Music and Venezuela's Voice in Oregon

The Djangophiles started in Portland, Oregon in 2002 and have played extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest. And of course our primary influence in this ensemble is the late, great Belgian/French Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and the hot club of France. The Djangophiles play danceable swing/jazz of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The Djangophiles are David Stassens on guitar, James Mason on violin, Hyung Nam on guitar, David Evans on sax/clarinet, and Patrick Harry on upright bass.

Hailing from Colombia, Maria Olaya is a classical guitarist, music teacher, composer, and arranger, always inspired by the wealth of music in the Andes mountains where she grew up, the rhythms of the Colombian and Venezuelan flats, Blues, Bluegrass, and the sounds of Brazil, Spain, and Ireland among other forms of music.  Maria has performed and taught around the world, including appearances in Colombia, Germany, and the United States. She performs as a solo artist, as part of a guitar trio with John Silliman Dodge and Peter Zisa, and with the band Sky In The Road. For Maria, music is not just how she makes her living, it is how she lives her life. As she puts it: For me, music has always been a means for genuine connection with others, a means to experience transcendence and connect to our humanness.  For more information about Maria, please visit her website: mariaolaya.com

Born in Venezuela Marian Gutiérrez was formed within "El Sistema" founded by maestro José Antonio Abreu. At age of 12 she was selected as a violinist in the Venezuelan National Children's and Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 2001 she moved to Caracas to study violin at the Latin-American Violin Academy, she got a position in the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra performing in worldwide theaters such as Carnegie Hall (USA), Berlin Philharmonie (Germany), Royal Albert Hall (England) Teatro Alla Scala di Milano (Italy) under batons of renowned conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel and Gustavo Dudamel. In 2017 she moved to Miami and was part of the first violin section of The Miami Symphony Orchestra and also as part of its production team. Marian is passionate about singing, she was a national semifinalist in the Canta en Frances contest sponsored by the French Alliance of Venezuela in 2017 and that same year she participated in the charity gala of the I Love Venezuela Foundation in the city of Miami. In 2018 she moved to Portland to be part of the teaching artists of BRAVO Young Orchestra and manager of the BRAVO Community Orchestra.

Anne Weiss, from Portland Oregon, is a blues, soul and roots music singer/songwriter, guitarist and pianist with five albums to her credit. She studied classical piano, joined a street gang, became a mountaineer, developed a guitar obsession, worked as a political organizer, learned to salsa dance, became addicted to delta blues, sings with a 100-voice gospel choir, and yes, you will hear it all in her music. Combining soulful blues, acoustic funk, contemporary folk, gospel music, and smatterings of classical phrasing and Latin rhythms, Anne is known for her enormous bluesy voice, great guitar chops, and striking stage presence. Anne adds funk(!) ukulele and emotive piano work to many of her performances. She is a standout songwriter who has been covered by many artists. Anne is an engaging, funny, spontaneous performer, with an obvious joie de vivre and love of walking out on new musical and cultural edges. More about her musical adventures can be found  at www.anneweiss.com
