To Kill a Mockingbird
Mayoral Movies

Jul 05

(Robert Mulligan, USA, 1962, 35mm, 129 min)

Introduced by Mayor Mike McGinn

Friday, Jul 05 at 08:00PM

Sitting mayor and former lawyer Mike McGinn introduces this beloved adaptation of Harper Lee's heart-wrenching autobiographical novel of racial hatred in small-town 1930s Alabama. When lawyer Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) agrees to defend a black man unfairly accused of rape, he and his two young children are confronted with the reality of racial injustice in their small Alabama town. The film's message of tolerancetold from the point of view of a child, yet never childishhasn't grown old.

Peck deservedly won the Academy Award for his role and the film also won Oscars for Best Screenplay and Art Direction. In addition, it was nominated for Awards for Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Musical Score and Supporting Actress (for Mary Badham, who plays tomboy daughter, Scout, and who through whose eyes the film is framed).
