MacB: The MacBeth Project
The African-American Shakespeare Company gives a new beat to an old classic, Shakespeares MacB. This timeless tragedy is set to music and choreographed in the spirit of a spoken word form. MacBeth is reincarnated as a record industry mogul and his struggle for power is the battle to become the top dog in the music biz. Destiny presents itself in the form of the three witches, a trio singing group in similar fashion of a Destinys Child trio, where these sorceresses morph into several shapes and characters throughout the production. The play wrestles between the creation and destruction aspect of the music industry, as violence surrounds the artist and the influences of music executives and their policies.
From the moment that the witches meet MacB, their words, rhythm and message enchant him. MacB is the story of a gifted, honorable man driven by passion and desire that is sidetracked into committing deeds of treachery and bloodshed.
The production touches upon the very destructive and violent aspects of the music industry and how the lure of riches and fame can entrap one man to his demise.
