Saxon Brown Tasting
Saxon Brown Wine Tasting Event Limited to 20 guests Wednesday June 12, 2013 Priced at $45
Course 1: Cheese Pairing
Paired with: 2009 Saxon Brown "Fighting Brothers" Semillon
Saxon Brown's "old vine, field blended" Semillon is a blend of Semillon and Muscadelle de Bordelaise. To retain both the fig-y richness of the Semillon and the bright, fruitiness of the Muscadelle de Bordelaise - which can get lost during barrel aging - the Semillon is cold tank fermented, rested briefly on yeast and then bottled for release within eight months of harvest. Jeff has always wanted to make a Semillon like this; young, lively, full of fruit and perfectly refreshing for summer seafood and entertaining. It's a truly different style for Semillon.
Course 2: Three Cheese Truffle Flatbread: Aged White Cheddar + Parmigiano Reggiano + Boschetto Cheese + Garlic + EVOO + Sundried Tomatoes + Fresh Rosemary
Paired with: 2009 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay
A rare cross-appellation vineyard spanning the border of Sonoma Valley and Carneros, Durell is a "rock star" vineyard; coveted for its small clusters of deeply concentrated fruit. The vineyard's sloping hills, rocky clay loam soils and low-vigor vines keep yields low three tons per acre on average while its clonal diversity ensures great complexity.
Course 3: Savory Flatbread: EVOO + Prosciutto + Blue Cheese + Pamigiano Reggiano + Fig Orange Spread + Cherry Tomatoes + Mixed Greens + Salt & Pepper
Paired with: 2009 Parmalee Hill Pinot Noir
The vineyard, planted in 1996 in south west Sonoma Valley, is owned and farmed by Steve Hill and his wife Gwen. This is the same Steve Hill who manages the famed Durell Vineyard, right next door. The fruit for this block-designate wine is from the Camp Block, a 1.5 acre parcel that sits on the edge of a hill near the family's camp site. Here, the Durell clone is planted on S04 Rootstock in clay loam (red/brown) soils
Course 4: Dessert.
Paired with: 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
This is a fun find for us: Napa Cab with a little bottle age. Drinking on its plateau: still very rich and with smoothed-out tannins. From "Lewelling Vineyard" in St Helena and a vineyard behind Caymus. Smell & taste blackberries, currants, soy sauce, roasted herbs, pipe tobacco, minerals, bittersweet chocolate. Less than 300 cases made.
About Saxon Brown
With Saxon Brown, owner/winemaker Jeff Gaffner has parlayed his time growing up in the vineyards of Sonoma Valley and his more recent experiences as a consulting winemaker to top Napa and Sonoma wineries into a line of small, site driven bottlings that celebrate his vineyard-focused winemaking.
Jeff began his winemaking career at Chateau St. Jean under the tutelage of renowned vintner Richard Arrowood, who Jeff credits with teaching him the importance of being as passionate about growing the grapes as making the wine. While at Chateau St. Jean, Jeff was part of the winemaking team responsible for the winery's celebrated 1996 Cinq Cepages, which was named the 1999 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine.
In 1997 Jeff launched Saxon Brown to showcase his vineyard-focused winemaking. He named his label for the willful heroine of Jack London's Valley of the Moon; the iconic chronicle of a family's search for the ideal farmstead; a journey that leads them to Sonoma Valley. Rich in Sonoma Valley history, the novel is a favorite of Jeff's and his sons Jason and Tyler.
Saxon Brown gained early recognition for its single vineyard Pinot Noir and "old vine" Zinfandel made from heritage, field-blended vineyards planted by Sonoma's early Italian immigrants. Over the years, Jeff has built on Saxon Brown's vineyard-focus with small offerings from both established and emerging vineyard sites, including: Pinot Noir from the famed Durell Vineyard (Sonoma County), Pinot Noir, Syrah from Parmellee Hill Vineyard (Sonoma Valley), Zinfandel from Stonewall, and in select vintages, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
In the years since, Jeff has become a sought after consulting winemaker, having gained critical acclaim and a loyal following for his site-specific focus and restrained elegant style. The Wall Street Journal has said that they "love his vineyard voice", while the Wine Spectator has lauded his winemaking as "deft".
In addition to Saxon Brown, Jeff is consulting winemaker for small luxury labels including: Xtant (Napa Valley), Stephanie (Napa Valley), Black Kite Cellars (Anderson Valley), Etre (Sonoma Coast) and Ram's Gate Winery (Carneros).
