Learn to play Slack Key and Ukulele
Workshops in Slack Key, and Ukulele will be held November 9, 2013 beginning at 10:15am.
Roland Cazimero, Nathan Aweau, and Cyril Pahinui, traditional masters of Kiho'alu or slack key guitar (10:15am to 12:00) and Benny Chong and Peter Moon on ukulele (12:45 to 2:30pm) instruct in the kanikapila style.
Nana ka maka; ho'olohe ka pepeiao -watch with the eyes, and listen with the ears. Thus one learns. This traditional method provides the perfect instruction to this rich tradition. Students of all levels will be guided through simple exercises and solos to create the slack key sound.
Slack key can be played on any guitar, acoustic or electric. The term refers to both the musical style and the myriad ways the instrument is tuned. Instructors teach several traditional tunings. In addition, you'll learn the use of vibrato, harmonics, slurs, harmonies in thirds and sixths, legato playing and other musical ideas that have helped create a distinctive guitar sound. This lush finger-picking style will add new sounds and flavors to your entire repertoire.
Workshop sessions will be held at Dusty Strings Music School for $40 per session.
To sign-up please contact: Dusty Strings Music School Director (206) 634-1662 music@dustystringsstore.com
Participation is limited so please register early. Students must bring their own guitar or ukulele.
