The Birthday of the Infanta
Inspired by "Maids of Honor", Velazquez' famous painting, Oscar Wilde's story takes us to the Spanish court of the mid-17th century. It is the birthday of the young Infanta - arrogant, spoiled and heartless. As a special entertainment for her twelfth birthday, a "Fantastic" has been brought to the palace - an ugly, dwarfed boy - found innocently dancing and singing in nearby woods. The two children meet, one beautiful, heartless and unhappy; the other naive, poor, absurdly deformed but with the face and voice of an angel, a happy child. Of the two, the princess is the more severely crippled because she lacks human compassion. The 'Fantastic' changes her life.
