Join us for the Fifth Annual Atheist Film Festival in San Francisco on Saturday, September 14th, 2013!

The Atheist Film Festival, created in 2009, is the world's first film festival dedicated to showcasing feature films, documentaries, shorts and animated cinema created especially for the secular community. Whether you're an atheist, agnostic, skeptic, secular humanist, heathen, heretic, bright or just a fan of fresh, offbeat cinema that celebrates and encourages reason, critical thinking and freedom of inquiry both inside and outside of the movie theater, the Atheist Film Festival is for you.

In addition to the festival, consider joining us on Friday, September 13th for our Directors' Reception! Meet our visiting filmmakers and schmooze with local atheist celebrities at our beautiful Cow Hollow venue while enjoying wine, dinner, and cheesecake. Just $65 gets you a reception ticket and an all-day festival pass! (Address shared with attendees prior to the event.)

This year's film lineup:

Creation - 12:00 PM
(Directed by Jon Amiel, 108 min, 2009)
English naturalist Charles Darwin struggles to balance his revolutionary theories on evolution and his relationship with a religious wife, whose faith contradicts his work. The ongoing controversy over evolution created difficulties getting this film distributed in the USA, so don't miss a rare chance to see it on the big screen.

The Revisionaries - 2:00 PM
Followed by Q&A with director Scott Thurman!

(Directed by Scott Thurman, 92 min, 2012)
The theory of evolution and a re-write of American history are caught in the crosshairs when an unabashed Creationist seeks re-election as chairman of America's most influential Board of Education - in Texas, naturally. Director Scott Thurman will be present to answer questions about how the absurd situation has evolved (pun intended) since his documentary.

DOUBLE FEATURE - 4:10 PM
Ron Goes To Heaven
(Directed by Alec Robbins and Ron Lechler, 4 min, 2012)
When a phone call from a friend and a surreal question send Ron on an existential journey to the kingdom of Heaven, he meets God. He takes this rare opportunity to ask God for the answers to some of life's hardest questions.
Sophia Investigates the Good News Club
Followed by Q&A with intrepid investigator Sophia Winkler!

(Directed by Scott Burdick, 36 min, 2012)
A window on the powerful religious fundamentalism that is forcing public schools to subsidize and promote its agenda across the country. Lead skeptical reporter Sophia Winkler will be at the festival to answer questions about her experience getting to the bottom of the club's shady proselytization tactics.

Kūmāré - 5:20 PM
Directed by Vikram Ghandi, 84 min, 2011
This feature documentary shows how filmmaker Vikram Gandhi impersonated a fake guru and built a following of real people. A must-see for those who question the cult of personalityor who have ever considered starting their own cult.

Hug An Atheist - 7:45 PM
WORLD PREMIERE followed by Q&A with director Sylvia Broeckx!

(Directed by Sylvia Broeckx, 2013 - in production)
We're honored to be hosting the world premiere of this intelligent and moving documentary about atheism in the USA. The film talks with real people who are working hard to dispel the myths and untruths that plague ordinary American atheists on their journey through life. Director Sylvia Broeckx will be present to answer questions and maybe even give hugs.

The Magdalene Sisters - 9:45 PM
(Directed by Peter Mullan, 119 min, 2002)
The triumphant story of three extraordinary women whose courage to defy a century of injustice would inspire a nation, this film is as inspiring as it is infuriating. The dark tale is told with humanity and even humor in spite of the wretched abuses depicted.
