Mask Of The Broken Heart
Chosen for "Best Face Time" by the Pitch, Stephanie Roberts, the creator of Boom! revives her film-noir style, one-woman mask play, The Mask of the Broken Heart , performing June 13-15 at the Fishtank Performance Studio. This highly stylized, virtuosic thriller combines humor, pathos and beauty while paying tribute to classic film and contemporary Commedia dell'Arte.
When private dick, Ray Meridian, takes on a case for Lillian Mallicoat, the daughter of a famous Kansas City tractor baron, he confronts a mysterious past involving scandal, supernaturalism, and his own lost love. Roberts plays 13 characters in this original play made possible in part by The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City and The Charlotte Street Foundation.
Both Roberts and director Heidi Van are awardees of the Charlotte St. Foundation Generative Performing Artist Award. Van, founder of the Fishtank Performance Studio and HYBRID: A Theatre Collective, is no stranger to the form, as she and Roberts are fellow "Dellartians"graduates of Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre which trains in mask and clowning.
About the Artist: Stephanie Roberts is an assistant professor for UMKC's MFA Professional Actor Training Program where she teaches Clown, Commedia dell'Arte and Mask. She has toured nationally and abroad with several companies including the Seattle Mime Theatre and her original ensemble, Boom! An International Lost and Found Marching Band. She recently devised and directed Eat This! KC Chews on the Politics of Food, a play based on over 60 community interviews. Roberts is a recipient of the 2010 Charlotte Street Foundation Generative Performing Artist Award, and an Inspiration Award from the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City. She holds a BFA in Acting from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, and an MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre from Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre.
