Join us on Sunday June 16th for an evening of poetry and movement building at The Holdout in Oakland, CA. Featuring Brooklyn-based internationally renowned spoken word duo Climbing PoeTree and Fired Up! members.
***Fired Up! is a grassroots network of people who have been or are currently behind the walls of SF County Jail, building community with others who are committed to breaking down the barriers those walls produce. Together, we seek to build a vision of community rooted in principles of healing, self-determination, and social justice movement building. Fired Up! is a part of the California Coalition for Women Prisoners, working to dismantle the prison industrial complex.***
***Climbing PoeTree is the combined force of two boundary-breaking soul sisters who have sharpened their art as a tool for popular education, community organizing, and personal transformation. Alixa and Naima interweave spoke word, hip hop, and award-winning multimedia theater to expose injustice, channel hope into vision, and make a better future visible, immediate, and irresistible. With flawless cadence and impeccable lyricism, they weave together their voices to tell powerful stories of love and liberation, state and personal violence, social and environmental, racial, and sexual justice, women's empowerment, and human transcendence.***
When you buy a ticket, not only do you get to enjoy performances by Climbing PoeTree and Fired Up! members, but you will also be directly funding a poetry and story telling workshop by Alixa and Naima in San Francisco County jail later in the week.
This event is also a time for us to share and celebrate all the exciting work our group has been engaged in this year to build across jail walls. We've also collaborated with other amazing individuals and organizations like CUAV, POWER, Critical Resistance, and radical filmmakers
Please spread the word to friends, family and members of your networks. You can share or join the event on dacebook: ttps://www.facebook.com/events/597960690228476/ People of all ages are welcome. This is a wheelchair accessible space.
