MAN AND SUPERMAN by George Bernard Shaw
MAN AND SUPERMAN is Shaw's retelling of the Don Juan legend. He was told, half in jest, by friends and critics, that he would never be a great playwright until he tackled this popular story that had been told many times, from Moliere to Mozart. Shaw accepted the challenge, but turned the story on its head. He made the traditionally accused womanizer, Don Juan, into the victim pursued relentlessly by women. In Shaw's play, Jack Tanner (Don Juan) succumbs to the pursuit of Ann Whitefield (Dona Anna), and surrenders to the Life Force because, in the words of Shakespeare's Benedick in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, "The world must be peopled."
MAN AND SUPERMAN is directed by ShawChicago's Artistic Director Robert Scogin.
