The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber
Andrew Lloyd Webber is regarded as the most successful musical-theater composer of the last 5 decades. He wrote numerous hit shows, including the two longest running musicals in the history of the West End London and Broadway - Cats and The Phantom of the Opera. In this course you will view DVD productions of the following:
1. The Royal Albert Hall Celebration of Lloyd Webber's 50th Birthday (2001)
2. Jesus Christ Superstar (2001) starring Carter and Edwards
3. Evita (1996) starring Madonna, Banderas and Pryce
4. Cats (2000) starring Paige, Mills, Page
5. The Phantom of the Opera (1929 restored movie of the 1925 original) starring Lon Chaney
6. The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2012) starring Karimloo and Boggess
The course will familiarize you with the scope of Lloyd Webbber's work and emphasize the understanding of their plots, lyrics and musical values.
A 57-page syllabus, including bios as well as synopses and commentaries on the various presentations will be presented to all enrollees.
John Frey is a retired Chemistry professor, with a broad interest in the arts. As an opera lover and film-goer he will eludicdate the striking connections between opera and the songs and musical-theater and movie productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
