Kris Delmhorst and Rusty Belle are two amazing acts in their own right - but in this case they also happen to be good friends. That spirit of community and collaboration should be in fine form tonight as this group of highly creative performers share the carpets of the Lizard Lounge. Look for individual performances as well as collaboration.
Kris Delmhorst almost needs no introduction. A seasoned veteran of many tours, many stages and many records would wear many artists down. But not her. Kris' arresting new album Shotgun Singer began as an act of solitary creation. Holed up in a rural cabin with minimal recording gear and a houseful of instruments, Delmhorst recorded her new songs alone and off the clock, in late night sessions that yielded layers of intimate vocals combined with nylon string and electric guitars, cellos, keyboards, and percussion. She treated the work like oil painting, allowing the canvas to breathe and change over the course of many months until the picture emerged. With the core of each song patiently assembled, she brought in a diverse cast of players to add sparse backing lines of drums, keys, guitar, and vinyl-based samples, and then signed on co-producer Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter) in arrangement and mixing, enlisting him meanwhile to play keyboards and percussion on several songs. The result is collection of songs fully realized and even lush at times, but retaining a hushed intensity, a spirit of lo-fi intimacy and unhurried exploration.
Rusty Belle describe themselves as "dirty kids with badminton guitars making a backyard hootenanny; a middle yard secret meeting in the clubhouse under the rhododendrons with cookpot helmets and broomstick getaways." Seven Days in Burlington says, "They're a little bit country, a little bit rock'n'roll, a little bit old-timey and a whole lotta weird. But in a good way. This quartet mashes genres as if they they were tasty little sonic potatoes."
