Voices From the Heart Concert
Celebrate the spring with singing on June 8 at South Church at 4:00 and 7:30 p.m.! Hear the 200 women of "Voices from the Heart" celebrate, sing, and dance with songs from around the globe. "I'm so excited to embrace these musical expressions from so many fabulously interesting cultures," says Director Joanne Connolly, "We'll bring it all into the room beginning with a Ghana Alleluia and African drumming , followed by high energy Zulu songs from South Africa, a dancey tune from Cuba and a slow very evocative song from Korean, a song calling for the reuniting of North and South Korea. One of our singers will be moving to Korea to teach in the fall, and we wanted to send her off with this gorgeous piece. We will follow the Korean song calling for that country to be made whole by an Irish song of peace, entitled "Deep Peace".
Voices from the Heart will travel Down Under to sing their first New Zealand song, a Maori Chant made famous by "Moana and the Tribe". Traveling the globe the concert will end in India with a beautiful Sanskrit Chant "Jaya Narayani" followed by the very favorite "Jai Ho!" made famous as the ending piece in "Slumdog Millionaire".
"To celebrate so many cultures in music," says Connolly, "we will have a wide range of exotic and wonderful instrumentalists helping us celebrate the music cultures; a full lineup of really amazing world music musicians including, Randy Armstrong, Matt Jenson, Volker Nahrmann, Jose Duque ,Shamou and our very own Drumamma! Our World Music Ensemble will be playing the Indian sitar, the shruti box... the conga, darbuka, djembe and conga, a full band of synthesizer, bass, guitar and drums. The music, the singing, the dancing , the world beat will surely keep your spirit soaring throughout the concert and beyond!!
