SHANE MAUSS PRESENTS: STAND UP SCIENCE
SATURDAY, JANUARY 26 2019 | SHAKESPEARES LOWER LEVEL
STAND-UP COMEDIANS + SCIENTISTS + BEER = STAND UP SCIENCE
Doors: 8PM | Show: 9PM | 21+ | $15 ADV | $22 ATD
Award-winning stand-up comedian and science podcast host Shane Mauss presents Stand Up Science! Learn and laugh as local scientists, comedians and other special guests join Shane to bring you a one-of-a-kind show that is equal parts ahas and hahas.
Stand-up comedy and science have a lot in common. They both reveal truth, change our perceptions, and challenge the status quo. So why are they so under appreciated? Admittedly, comedy sometimes underestimates the intelligence of audiences, catering to the lowest common denominator. And science has the stigma of sometimes being overly complicated, un-relatable or boring. Until now.
Funnier and more provocative than TED Talks, while smarter than traditional stand-up comedy, Stand Up Science combines the best of both worlds. This thought-provoking night of laughs will leave you a little smarter, a little happier and send you home with plenty of fuel for your own conversations.
What to Expect: As your host, Shane kicks the evening off with some of his best material on brainy topics, before introducing special guest speakers and performers. Guests range from Ivy League professors presenting groundbreaking academic research to local stand-up comedians delivering their most cerebral material. At the end of the night, Shane brings all the guests back onstage and opens the floor for a Q&A and interactive discussion with the audience.
About the host and origins of Stand-Up Science: Shane Mauss leads two lives. In one, he tours full-time as a stand-up comedian. Guests
Sharon A Gill: Sharon Gill is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University. Shes primarily interested in the ecology of sound, asking questions about animal communication and effects of environmental change on animal sounds, as well as exploring what the collective sounds of the environment, or soundscapes, reveal about often unseen threats to nature. Her research on sound has been supported by private foundations, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense.
David Karowe: Dr. David Karowe is a professor in Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University. Karowe's students are investigating potential ecological consequences of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide. Karowe's lab is looking into how the nutritional quality and defensive chemistry of plants change under elevated CO2, and how such changes affect the growth, survivorship and behavior of insect herbivores and parasitoids. The ultimate goal of this research is to expand understanding of the ecological and evolutionary consequences of elevated CO2 to include higher trophic levels. This work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Agriculture.
Bob Fredericks: Bob Fredericks has been described as A man who gets up at 10 am and is not afraid to put on a chicken suit, in order to get some laughs. He has also been known to wear a flaming PBR hat just for the experience. It has been said that his comedy can be self deprecating, yet endearing. Through non sequiturs, strange observations, and stories Bob shares laughs with his audience. He hosts a regular show in Kalamazoo Michigan and cannot wait to share laughter with you.
