Music in the Chapel: Issam Rafea and Gao Hong Duo
Lakewood's Music in the Chapel concerts showcase a variety of artists in one of our city's most beloved architectural treasures, the Lakewood Memorial Chapel.
On Sunday, February 10, experience the blending of ancient souls from Syria and China as Issam Rafea and Gao Hong create beautiful improvisational music with two ancient instruments, the Syrian oud and the Chinese pipa.
The concert begins at 3:00 p.m. Doors open at 2:00 p.m. Self-guided tour brochures of the Lakewood Memorial Chapel will be available. Dedicated in 1910, the Lakewood Memorial Chapel was modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones. It features a 40-foot high dome ringed with stained glass windows and 12 mosaic angels. The Chapel's interior contains more than 10 million mosaic pieces of marble, colored stone and glass fused with gold and silver. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Chapel is one of the finest examples of Byzantine Revival architecture with mosaic interior in the country. Questions?
