Sgraffito Redware Plate
All of Denise's workshops begin with an introduction to Pennsylvania redware, including a demonstration using a rolling pin, circle cutter and mold to create a plate; and the two decorating techniques, sgraffito and slip-trailing, used by the 17th through 19th century Pennsylvania German potters. She has books for ideas or you may bring your own; she has all the tools required to complete your designs. No prior experience is required.
Price includes all materials, firing, and processing and one 7" plate). Additional plates: 7" plates = $25 10" plates = $35 Students can make up to three plates. Money for additional plates is paid to the instructor on the day of the class.
Denise Wilz has been creating Pennsylvania redware since 2002. She has a degree in Studio Art from Moravian College and was a computer programmer and craft hobbyist prior to embarking on a career as a potter. She is a Master Artisan in the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and is the current president of its Lehigh Valley chapter. She has been included in the 2017 Directory of Traditional American Crafts presented by Early American Life magazine; her work was featured in the Christmas issues of 2006 and 2007. Her article on Pennsylvania redware was published in the Pottery Making Illustrated March/April 2008 issue and it has been included in three additional publications by the American Ceramic Society in 2008, 2015, and 2016.
