Rainbow City Band Presents: Planet Earth
We are going to play an exciting and lush collection of pieces celebrating the majesty of our home... our Mother Earth. If I were programming this concert 15-20 years ago, it would look a lot different, simply focusing on musical representations immense glory of mountain peaks, the vast wonder of desert winds or the idyllic natural beauty of the French countryside, but in 2019 and within our Transformations Season, we will also include a few pieces that call attention to the dramatic human impact we are having on the future of this resilient yet delicate ecosystem. The program will round the corner through an intense and exciting work called Foundry, then into a meditative and slightly experimental piece, written by Washington's own, Alex Shapiro (who will hopefully make it down for a rehearsal or two). Alex's piece will include band members performing on found rocks and will be done with stunning projections of geological forces including and ending in the melting polar ice caps. The program will conclude with a joyful and energetic selections (including Steve Reineke's River of Life) that will leave us and our audience excited and hopefully ready and willing to take on our responsibility of preserving this home of which we are only temporary inhabitants.
