The Velaslavasay Panorama presents two evenings of Magic Lantern Performances and 16mm Films by Charlotte Pryce, including the Los Angeles premiere of her latest Magic Lantern Performance The Tears of a Mudlark (2018).
Charlotte Pryce explores proto-cinematic structures of the real and the imagined to create illuminations that hover on the periphery of vision and delight in catoptric playfulness and paradox. The program includes ten films made between 2004-2018, and two Magic Lantern Performances - Tears of a Mudlark (2018) and W.H.Hudsons Remarkable Argentine Ornithology (2013).
"This is pre-cinema at a time when we are moving beyond film. The only kind of video audio performance that it can be maybe compared with is the dusk-to-dawn Indonesian shadow puppet theater performances of gamelon orchestras. But what Pryce creates is something personal, miniature, like something you can hold in your hands. Its like nothing Ive ever seen in my life." -- Robert Koehlerl (critic/curator)
