Miss Margarida's Way
For those of you who never learned your lessons well in the first place, school is now in session! Miss Margarida's Way by Roberto Athayde transports audiences back to eighth grade, where Miss Margarida teaches the real facts of life. This tragicomic monologue for an impetuous woman is an interactive, hilarious, and ultimately poignant dark comedy which looks deeply into the heart of power and the futile attempt to create order out of chaos.
Playwright Athayde originally wrote the play in the early 1970s as a critique of the dictatorial government in Brazil, but after it was banned he turned the controversial main character into a totalitarian eighth-grade teacher, playing the role himself in drag. After it was translated into English, it became a huge hit on Broadway, starring Estelle Parsons as the unpredictable and passionate Miss Margarida. For todays audiences, the play has even more relevance now as we struggle with issues of individual freedom and control over our lives, choosing whether to be passive and obedient children or active participants in our own future.
This production brings a fresh, fun take on this old school gem, crossing boundaries of culture as well as time. Produced by the award-winning Teatro Boa Viagem, this marks the first English language play directed by Ramiro Daniel, who directed several highly successful shows in Spanish at Incanto including Princesas Desesperadas, Ella 2.0, and Que No Se Culpe a Nadie a Mi Muerte. Making her Puerto Vallarta debut in the title role is Celeste Innocenti, a professional actress (and teacher) from San Diego, California, who is also the Artistic Director of Chronos Theatre Group, a nonprofit theater which explores connections between world cultures and time periods.
