Paintbox & Bitter Pill
Paintbox is an album consisting of 16 original songs by singer/songwriter/guitarist Jon McCormack. What started as an eclectic and seemingly unrelated group of songs - all of which were inspired by the names of paint colors -gradually revealed itself to be a concept album about art, creation, aging, mortality and what we leave behind during our short time on earth. Told through the eyes of its main character Sweet Annie Pepperberry, Paintbox reminds us that it is never too late to share our art with the world despite the distractions and detours of life.
The Paintbox album will be released at the end of 2018 with a theatrical production based on the album coming in 2019. An all-star band of the same name will perform the album live at the The Dance Hall in Kittery on 1/19/19. The band will feature Jon McCormack (Museum of Science, Fly Spinach Fly, Shango), Stu Dias (Soggy Po Boys, Shango, Gnarlemagne), Rick Habib, (Dreadnaught, Wizzardess, Order of Thieves), Joe Harding (Dean Ford & The Beautiful Ones) and Duncan Watt (Thanks To Gravity, Dreadnaught).
Self-described as bloody folk, Bitter Pill plays a dark and anachronistic combination of Death-country, Neofolk, Psychobilly, Bluegrass, and a little bit of vaudeville. They just released their first album, Prepare Your Throats. A collection of traditional and original songs from the soundtrack of their staging of William Shakespeares violent, bloody, grotesquely ridiculous abomination of a play, Titus Andronicus. Bitter Pill is a family affair featuring Emily Butler on vocals and her dad, Billy Butler, on cello; along with Mike McKay on banjo/mandolin, Jon McCormack on acoustic guitar, and a rotating roster of singers, circusers, actors, and awkwards.
Exhilarated. Stimulated." NHPR
"Prepare Your Throats is intriguing, creative, humorous, raw and not all that wholesome. Two mighty severed thumbs up. Modspoke.com
