Celebrations An African Odyssey
CELEBRATIONS: AN AFRICAN ODYSSEY BACKGROUND
CELEBRATIONS: AN AFRICAN ODYSSEY is a musical written by playwright, and composer Ricardo Pitts-Wiley in 1979. It is the story of Jaharri, an African Princess coming of age in her homeland, when she is kidnapped and sold into bondage in America. However, Jaharri is able to escape and return to her homeland and people. The author calls CELEBRATIONS a Middle Passage Play in that it follows the journey or odyssey of its protagonist through the history, customs and celebrations of survival in Africa, across the Middle Passage, to celebrations of survival in America and back again. Perhaps most of all the story and the shows characters pay homage to the strength and resilience of a people and the unbreakable human spirit
