Bay Area's and Santa Cruz's very own, jazz vocalist, Gail Dobson, wife of the late great pianist, Smith Dobson, mom of vocalist, Sasha Dobson, and multi-instrumentalist son, Smith Dobson V, makes her first appearance at Michael's on Main. Her band, which features Bay Areas top musicians, is a marriage of traditional jazz harmonies played straight ahead, and also with Latin rhythms, and highlights her philosophy and strong inclination to allow the music to unfold naturally. through encouraging player interaction and soloing. This is the tradition that she grew up with in jazz, and shared with Smith and the kids. Her band features her son, Smith, on alto and tenor saxophone, guitarist, Luis Salcedo, bassist Adam Gay, and drummer Omar Aran. The Gail Dobson Quintet has been described as "exquisite, to hard swingin'". The repertoire consists of jazz standards from The Dobson Songbook; and new material and arrangements, from their new EP, "How Fragile We Are" songs written by Sting, Cure, Herbie Hancock.and Jobim to name a few. Jazz vocalist/percussionist, Gail Dobson and her Quintet, featuring son, Smith Dobson-tenor and alto saxophone, playing the Dobson Songbook plus music by Sting, Cure, Abbey Lincoln.
