NOMAD JONES A Western Canadian Bluegrass Band
With two years of shows under their belts and a hot new cd released in July 2018, Nomad Jones is itching to bring their show to Nanaimo!
BLOOD HARMONIES + VIRTUOSO INSTRUMENTALISTS + CONNECTION WITH THE AUDIENCE + GREAT MIX OF SONGS = A HIGH ENERGY, ENTERTAINING SHOW
Nomad Jones is a hot and happening Western Canadian bluegrass outfit equally comfortable ripping on rollicking classics or serenading on sultry love songs. Drawing from a wide ranging repertoire from traditional bluegrass thru old country to originals, Nomad Jones will entertain you with their blood harmonies, amusing anecdotes and intriguing instrumentals. Over the past two years, Nomad Jones has become a fan-favourite at festivals throughout Western Canada. Their first album entitled "Pickin' Up & Puttin' Down" was released in August 2018.
A combination of youth and beauty, veterans and virtuosos, they are 5 players whose sum total is much greater than their parts. The youngest member of the band, Nico Humby (Edmonton, AB) bounces and bops around stage while putting down a solid bottom end on the double bass. On top of that, he providing passionate lead and harmony vocals. Nico's entertaining bluegrass style has evolved through years of singing and playing various genres of music, from R&B and swing, to folk and funk. Also a fine songwriter, Nomad Jones has a number of his songs in the band repertoire.
A young and talented multi-instrumentalist, Miles Zurawell (Victoria, B.C.) has a way of playing with your emotions as he riffs, rolls and rakes along on resonator guitar and banjo. He adds his vocal stylings to the stack as well. Miles counts Earl Scruggs, JD Crowe, Rob Ickes, Jerry Douglas, Billy Cardine and Bryan Sutton among his influences. He has toured North America with such notable musicians as Greg Blake and Blaine Sprouse.
After starting to play rhythms on her fiddle at 16 months old, Katrina Nicolayeff's mother Bobbie started teaching her old-time fiddle tunes at 18 months. She entered her first fiddle contest when she was two years old. Now living in Meridian, Idaho, Katrina has won 7 titles at the National Oldtime Fiddler's Contest where she earned the title of National Grand Champion. In 2014 Katrina won her third world title of Grand Master Fiddler Champion. When not performing, she teaches fiddle in Meridian as well as at workshops across North America.
Providing the drive and direction for Nomad Jones is preeminent performer, Craig Korth (Nelson, BC). Craig brings a vast knowledge of the genre to the band with nearly 40 years experience taking the stage across North America. On top of his brilliant playing, his often adds his hilarious insights into the history of the music, the players and the instruments. He is an accomplished luthier and along with his wife, Julie Kerr, they run the NimbleFingers Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Workshop and Festival in Sorrento B.C. every August.
Rounding out the band is Bill Humby (Nanaimo, BC) singing his heart out on lead and harmony vocals and providing rooted rhythm guitar. Bill has a vast musical background that includes performing in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas in junior high, drumming in a lounge band, and singing with the Real Humdingers (with son Nico and daughter Paula) on a French Canadian reality television show. Since catching the bluegrass bug at the turn of the century, Bill is continually searching for new material with that great harmony hook to add to the diverse Nomad Jones song catalog.
