WOMEN IN OPERA: THEN & NOW
An exploration of women as characters and creators in existing and new opera, featuring Puccini/Forzanos Suor Angelica (50 minutes, fully-staged w/English Surtitles) followed by two newly created works from winners of a new prize, created by Musique 3 Femmes, honouring emerging Canadian women composers and librettists. A panel discussion will follow the performance.
SUOR ANGELICA (Giacomo Puccini, 1918) The story of a young noblewoman forced to enter the convent after a youthful indiscretion that led to the birth of an illegitimate child. Tragedy, death and redemption on the landscape of Puccinis lush score.
THE CHAIR (Atallah & Abracen, 2019) After her best friend dies in a tragic accident, Melanie returns to school locked in a world of her own thoughts and numb to the well wishes of her peers. The opera explores grief in adolescence, and how we choose to move on from those weve lost.
BOOK OF FACES (Harder & Telford, 2019) An irreverent, tongue-in-cheek operatic take on the many faces of social media.
