Empowered Self-Defence
A huge THANK YOU to the Wellness Education Centre and to the Mental Health Alumni Campaign for making this course available and accessible to students at Wilfrid Laurier University! This course is open to all current WLU students who identify as women or as non-binary. Welcome!
In this Wen-Do Women's Self-Defence Course, we are on a mission for you to feel more powerful and more free in your life.
In this course, we will tap into your knowing, your awareness and your power to reveal the most self-assured version of yourself.
I am here for women exactly like you: Women who know that the stereotypes about us aren't true. Still, it's hard to shake off that uncomfortable doubt: If I had to defend myself, could I?
Or perhaps this is your chance to make sure that the violence or abuse that has happened to you never, ever happens again. You are in the right place.
Wen-Do is different than any other self-defence program you have seen. In this course, you will prepare your mind and your body for greater confidence and to move more freely in this world. As your instructor, I will meet you at your ability and skill level and I will work to help you reveal your power.
This is simple and powerful self-defence that is effective against physically larger and stronger attackers, and designed to be used by us, in the situations we are most likely to experience danger.
* Wen-Do course content and this physical location are accessible to all people and bodies.
Wen-Do is survivor-centered, empowerment-based, accessible and intersectional self-defence. All women are welcome - and this of course includes transwomen. If you identify as gender nonbinary, please get in contact to see if the instructor can meet your needs. Together, we will strive to create a nonjudgmental space that respects each others' choices and lifestyles.
Class times are Thursday evenings: January 24, 31, February 7, 14 & 28, from 6pm-9pm. *There will be no class during reading week.* The exact location will be given to attendees upon registration.
"I really enjoyed taking this course. I was able to self-reflect and feel so empowered. Going forward I feel confident enough to stand up for myself and others when I see that they are in unwanted situations and/or harmful ones. Thank you for being so kind and patient w/ everyone. This course and Shai specifically has inspired me to be a better version of myself. Thank you so much!" - Wilfrid Laurier University student and Wen-Do course participant, October 2018
"It took a lot of strength for me to make it to class on the first day because of how emotionally trying the thought of coming face-to-face with my feelings of physical inadequacy was... After the first class it was remarkable how secure and at peace I felt with embodying my whole physical and emotional self, knowing that I have the power within me to execute my Wen-Do skills if I need to use them... I will always know that I have infinite physical and emotional power as a woman and that my relationship to this power will help empower others to work towards a better world. Thank you thank you thank you." - Wilfrid Laurier University student and Wen-Do course participant, October 2018
